A big dresser, filing cabinet or shelving unit is certainly awkward to handle. Tip the item back at an angle and have one person hold the top while another carries the bottom. This balances the weight and prevents the item from swinging and swaying out of control. The moving of the item up or down stairs is made easier as well since the carrying slant will more or less match the slope of the stairs.
A large chair can be far from an easy to move. Follow the example set by professional movers and “hook” large chairs around corners and through doorways. Flip the chair to its side so it forms an “L” shape and move it back-first into the doorway. Then curl it around the frame of the door and slide it through.
If you ever need to manoeuvre a couch down a hallway and through a door, you might find it nearly impossible to carry it horizontally and make the turn into the room. However, before you enter the hallway, put the couch on its end and then slide it towards the doorway. You will pretty much always be able to hook it through the doorway. If it happens to be slightly taller than the doorway, then start the top away from the door and in order to give you several more centimetres of clearance.
Moving blankets are priceless when protecting the items you are moving as well as your house. Sure enough, renting them can be inexpensive, but you can buy several for just a few extra bucks, you can always purchase them and have them on hand. To avoid damaging the finish and the fragile corners of dressers, tables and other furniture, you could wrap the items entirely with moving blankets and protect the blanket with stretch film.
When you’re hauling a sofa through a doorway, bear in mind: You can always make it a few centimetres smaller by removing the feet. The same ideology applies to any item of furniture you need to make smoother or lighter: Take off any knobs, drawers, shelves, racks and legs.
