Move preparation. Estimate how many boxes are required and obtain boxes and packing materials. De-clutter before packing and keep lists of the items packed in the boxes. Place a list of items on the box.
- Wrap all glass items in news paper or tissue paper. Pack carefully not too tightly. Do not squash items in the box. Place packing peanuts or kitchen towels in open spaces between items to prevent breakage.
- Use cardboard squares between glass plates and pack straight up to prevent clanging together and lessen the chance of breakage.
- Fragile items should never be packed at the top or bottom of a box. These boxes should be clearly marked with fragile contents identification.
- Properly seal underneath before filling the boxes. Never overfill boxes and add cushioning in between if necessary. Clearly mark each box by room.
- Discard all flammables like lighter fluid, aerosols, paint stripper, and open liquid bottles such as cosmetics and condiments.
- The law prohibits transport of firearms and illegal substances.
Give attention to the following final actions before moving
- Notify relevant utility and subscription companies of your departure and new contact details well in advance as this may be a lengthy process.
- Dismantle items which can be taken apart in advance to save time on moving day.
- Defrost and clean fridges and freezers and leave open for a day or two to freshen out. Bicarbonate of soda will help to get rid of odours safely.
- Unplug the washing machine and dishwasher and drain water from appliances.
- Ensure all electrical wires are disconnected from the outlets.
- Take down the satellite dish.
- Ensure all doors and drawers are locked or tied down on wardrobes, cupboards and appliances as these items may be tilted when carried by hand.
- Check all cupboards are empty and taps closed tightly.
- Flush toilets, close all windows and lock all doors.
- Walk around the outside of the house to ensure all will be safe and ready for the arrival of the new occupants.
Handling large, heavy furniture pieces: Lifting heavy pieces of furniture may damage or injure your musculoskeletal system. Consider rather sliding the furniture than lifting all the way. Tilting the item and sliding a towel or piece of cardboard underneath the base of the furniture will protect the floor. Cardboard works best on carpets and towels on tiled floors. Check if it’s not easier to pull the item rather than push it. Furniture items should be wrapped carefully to protect the wood and other finishes. Wrap glass and mirrors in packing blankets and tape in place.
